How musical is Amsterdam’s Central Station?
Fragments of a telephone conversation sing a duet with the soft hum of an escalator. Hurried footsteps, a whistle, and a muffled public address announcement are transformed into a sweet song suddenly drowned out by the roar of roller suitcases.
In its latest concert series Loop-Copy-Mutate: Music from People and Places the Genetic Choir turns the station’s sounds into a choral performance. Underground, in the yet unfinished North-South Line metro station, the choir takes these sounds and – together with the laptop musician Robert van Heumen and programmer Stelios Manousakis – uses them for an instant composition concert: music as vital and unpredictable as the city itself.
In the weeks preceding the concert the Genetic Choir will hold ‘sound walks’ around Amsterdam CS and ask travellers, passers-by, and people from all over the world to listen to the stations’ sounds as if they were a symphony. They will be invited to add their chosen sounds to a musical database. During the concert on 2 July, the public will decide which sounds will be used in the final composition. Loop-Copy-Mutate is a piece of music whose audience is an essential part of the performance.
